Sutton Images and GPWeek.com Congratulate Luca Filippi
2011 GP2 Series Vice-Champion
Sutton Images and GPWeek.com supported Luca Filippi has finished second in the 2011 GP2 Series after the season finale at Monza last weekend.
One of the best loved and highest regarded drivers in GP2 Series history, luck has not always been on the side of the speedy Italian. A consistent front-runner with natural pace and talent, and an ability to quickly get on top of a car's issues, combining his experience, knowledge and personality to pull teams together and move them up the grid.
Never more has this been in evidence than in the 2011 campaign, when a mid season team change saw him arrive at Coloni, the team with whom he'd made his GP2 debut in 2006 when the squad was known as FMS. Until that moment in his 2011 season Filippi had collected just 9 points racing with SuperNova, while Coloni had recorded only one points finish all season after losing Davide Rigon for the leg fracture suffered in Istanbul.
Filippi's arrival marked a turning point for both, and since then the all-Italian pairing recorded 3 wins, one third place and has scored in all but one race, to take second place in the championship behind runaway leader Romain Grosjean.
A driver cruelly overlooked for too many years, 2011 has truly been the season in which Filippi's star has shone and his immense talents have been put to the test and been rewarded with ultimate success.
Luca Filippi on becoming 2011 GP2 Series vice-champion:
“It's unbelievable: after the beginning of the season, even though the speed was there, I wasn't scoring points, but something happened, everything clicked, and we did everything right in the last two or three months.
“With Coloni everything went so well because the atmosphere and the motivation in the team is something unbelievable. We were pushing so hard together, and the smile on the faces under the podium is something to remember forever. I think we will never forget this summer, me and the whole team.”
Paolo Coloni, Team Manager Scuderia Coloni:
"It is an unbelievable result for us considering Luca only had 4 races, to take 3 maiden wins and to come second in the drivers Championship is amazing. This has never happened before and we have made history. I am more than happy for my team of engineers, and the job Luca did to end the season is amazing.
“I would like to thank all the people who believe in the team and all the sponsors for their amazing support and now look forward to 2012 and more success.
“The team is getting stronger and stronger technically and their amazing job is rewarding my commitment to the sport I love and opening my eyes to something bigger for the future.”
Keith Sutton, CEO Sutton Images and GPWeek.com Director:
“I’d like to personally congratulate Luca on his magnificent achievement in becoming the 2011 GP2 Series vice-Champion in Monza last weekend. Sutton Images and GPWeek.com have had the pleasure in supporting both Luca and the Coloni team in 2011 and his mid-season signing for the team has reaped dividends for them both. In the meantime we wish him more success in the remaining AutoGP round of 2011.
