Breen Crowned Formula BMW UK Champion 2006

Knockhill, 3 September, 2006.

Niall Breen (Fortec Motorsport) has secured the Formula BMW UK Championship 2006 title after a dominating display throughout the season sees him champion with three races still to go. “It’s a brilliant feeling; I’ve been taking it one race at a time but always with the title in mind. It’s a dream to win the championship and I hope this is the start of things to come”, smiled the Irishman, after finishing second in Round 17 at Knockhill, ahead of his nearest title rival Ross Curnow (Nexa Racing) who came home in sixth.

Breen, from Dundalk, started his career karting in Ireland before moving over to the UK to race in Formula BMW in 2005. He came in to this year with the experience and knowledge to set his sights firmly on the title and after a double win at his home race at Mondello Park, was thrust firmly into the spotlight as a contender for this year’s title. From that point on there was no stopping the twenty-year-old as his cool calm approach saw him finish on the podium fourteen times out of seventeen races so far.

After winning eight races this year Breen has also put his name in the history books as the top all time race winner in Formula BMW UK Championship. “I knew I only had to finish ahead of Curnow today to secure the championship, so I kept having a look at his pit board to check where he was,’ Breen commented, “hopefully I can get another podium this afternoon now.” “I still want to win at Silverstone as well, it just means that there isn’t as much pressure for a result now so I can really go and enjoy racing in my final weekend” Breen said
